Federated Church Pumpkin Patch

Nov 30, 2020 11:46AM ● By Chuck Tashjian

Several years ago, the Federated Church of Ashland entered into a fundraising event to sell pumpkins and gourds during the month of October and ending on Halloween. The event has been successful and over the years has become a “look forward to” by many families in Ashland and surrounding communities.

How do we get our pumpkins? The church contracts with a fundraiser organization to receive an order of pumpkins and gourds of a variety of sizes and types. The fundraisers contract with Native Americans “Navajo” in New Mexico who grow the crops in immense fields. At harvest time, the pumpkins are loaded into semi-trailer trucks for the long haul to Ashland and other communities. With many people helping to offload the pumpkins and arrange them on the front lawn, the sale begins.

Upon completion of the sales period, the total dollars are divided into two buckets. Most of the money is returned to the Native Americans and the fundraising organization. The remaining money is retained by the church and is used to support our activities in the Ashland community and surrounding areas. Activities include supporting and sponsoring Family Promise, Local Women’s Shelter, AA and the Ashland Food Pantry.

Our story is a win win for our church, community and Native Americans. Our success is truly based on the active participation of many local families purchasing pumpkins and getting ready for the fun of Halloween.

Thank you and we hope to see you again next October.
