Ashland Girl Scout Troop Earns Bronze Award
Junior Troop 70699, led by Jennie Breault and Beth Mayerhofer, first completed the prerequisites including learning about animal habitats and eco camping. They completed their “Take Action” project by researching the continued use of plastic six pack rings.
They determined that even though these are required by EPA to be photobiodegradeable they stick around long enough to cause continued danger to animals and the ecosystem. The girls wrote a letter to Senator Warren asking her to propose a bill to eliminate the plastic rings completely. The final part of earning their Bronze award was to complete a long-lasting community service project. When the girls learned the big chair at the Corner Spot had deteriorated to the point of having to be removed, they, like much of the Ashland community, were sad and disappointed. The troop, along with some incredible Girl Scout dads, took on the task of restoring the chair. They learned about and used saws, drills, routers and sanders. Once the structural fixes were made, they painted the chair “Clocker” blue. The response from the town was tremendous and the girls are so proud of their achievement. Leaders would like to thank Ashland Lumber for donations and Beth Reynolds, Director of Economic Development and Community Outreach for her help. The troop would like to thank the community for their encouragement and support. Congratulations to Fiona Large, Amelia Forgit, Amelia Hussey, Abbie Breault, Yuna Woodward, Olivia Mayerhofer and Gia Liebhold.
