Ashland loses beloved resident

Ashland lost one of its most beloved residents, Igidio “Izzy” Assencoa, who died Tuesday, March 28, at UMass Medical Center.
“Izzy”, as he was affectionately known, graduated from Framingham High School in 1957. He served his country in the United States Air Force and later became a proud member of the Framingham Fire Department, serving the city of Framingham for over 20 years.
Izzy loved the town of Ashland and deeply cared about happenings there. He received recognition as Ashland Citizen of the Year and Hometown Hero from Boston 25, both in 2013.
He was a member of the Ashland Lions Club, having served as its President, and was involved in many of the club’s activities. Izzy could always be counted on to support the club. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, and advocated for Ashland’s senior citizens by serving on the Friends of the Ashland Council on Aging.
Many remember how he played Santa Claus at the senior center’s holiday parties.
His larger than life personality always brightened everyone’s day. A gentle giant, he was a kind, compassionate and caring man and a friend to all.
Donations in memory of “Izzy” may be made to the Ashland Lions Club, Box 150, Ashland MA 01721.
