June 20th at 11 am Donna Halper presents:  How the Civil Rights Movement Changed Society

The fact that we now celebrate both Martin Luther King Jr. ‘s birthday and Juneteenth demonstrates the importance of the civil rights movement in making our society more equitable. But many people know about Dr. King, there were other important men and women in the movement who worked to bring about social change. In this talk, you will not only learn how the Civil Rights movement grew; you will meet the men and women who worked with Dr. King to make it happen. Some of these people, you probably know-- like Rosa Parks and John Lewis. But others may not be as familiar-- like Carter G. Woodson, Fannie Lou Hamer and A. Philip Randolph. We will explore what the people of Dr. King’s time thought of the Civil Rights movement-- how he overcame strong opposition in the south; how he attracted media attention to his cause; and how his “I Have a Dream” speech became a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Finally, we’ll look at how Dr. King’s birthday finally became a holiday, and how similar advocacy led to the recognition of Juneteenth.
