Open Letter from Town Manager Michael Herbert

Dear Residents and Community Members of Ashland,

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we have shared in 2023. This year has been a remarkable chapter in the story of our town, filled with significant achievements and successful collaborations.

We witnessed the completion and substantial progress of several pivotal projects, each symbolizing our commitment to community development and welfare. The new Public Safety Building stands as a testament to our dedication to safety and well-being. The completion of the new Mindess School marks a stride forward in nurturing our future generations. Our Downtown Redesign project has rejuvenated the heart of Ashland, making it a vibrant and welcoming hub for all. The meticulous renovation of the Valentine Barn showcases our respect for history and heritage. Additionally, the significant strides we have made on the Pond Street project exemplify our continuous effort to improve and beautify our town.

The year 2024 brings with it a defined workload with a bit of uncertainty mixed in. Among other things, the poles downtown are scheduled to be removed this year, and more work on the Valentine property is scheduled to continue. We are also planning on constructing a long-awaited sidewalk on Route 135 between the Midde School and Frankland Road. Two very important plans are also scheduled to be finished or significant progress made during the year. Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan will be completed in the spring and we expect a full year’s worth of work on the extremely important Comprehensive Plan.

However, the financial picture for the coming year is a bit hazy. The macroeconomic indicators are split between a robust 2024 or one that sees us enter into a recession. Of course, the old saying is that economists have predicted the last ten out of two recessions, so we will need to take a wait-and-see approach as the federal government and Federal Reserve navigate fiscal and monetary policy over the next several months to engineer a “soft landing” for the economy.

None of the work done in 2023 would have been possible without the continued support and partnership of many. While I can’t thank everyone in this small letter, I do want to extend my gratitude to the Select Board for their leadership, guidance, and dedication to our town. Additionally, our Legislative Delegation, including Representative Jack Lewis and Senate President Karen Spilka, has been invaluable in bringing these projects to fruition.

In closing, I want to extend a special thanks to the incredible staff of Ashland. Your dedication and commitment to excellence have been the driving force behind our success. You consistently go above and beyond, delivering services and achieving goals that far exceed the expectations for a town of our size and budget.

Lastly, but most importantly, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the volunteers and residents of Ashland. Your enthusiasm, participation, and love for our town are the soul of our community. It is your energy and spirit that make Ashland not just a place to live, but a place to call home.

As we look forward to the year ahead, let us carry this spirit of community and collaboration. Together, we can continue to build a town that we are all proud to be a part of. Here’s to a bright and prosperous 2024!

With sincere gratitude and best wishes,

Michael Herbert, Town Manager
